Our History: Where we come from
2024
The results of the IB Diploma Programme in May 2024 once again show the outstanding performance of BCS students: the average BCS score is 35/45, while the global average of over 5000 schools worldwide is 30/45. The highest BCS score is an impressive 42/45 and the graduating class of 30 students achieved an average of 1.73.
2023
The first summer and sports camps take place at the new BCS campus. On 8 September 2023, the first BCS graduates will meet with students in grades 9-12 at the campus.
2022
The graduating class of 2022 achieves a grade point average of 1.5, despite the challenges of the pandemic – the best result in Berlin. The BCS nature campus at Müggelsee is also opened.
2021
The Berlin Cosmopolitan School is expanding its commitment with a new extracurricular learning centre at Müggelsee. Former pupils programme the Cosmo-Swap, an online marketplace for second-hand school clothes.
2020
From the second day of the shutdown, BCS will start regular online lessons for primary and secondary schools. The school kitchen will also be certified by the German Nutrition Society (DGE).
2019
The second TEDx Youth Event takes place with student speakers from grades 2-12. BCS once again achieves the best Abitur average of all Berlin grammar schools and for the first time runs two parallel classes from Year 1-12. In addition, Year 6 is integrated into weekly outdoor lessons and the kindergarten is awarded the title of ‘Leuchtturm Kita’.
2018
BCS organises its first TEDx Youth Event with student speakers from grades 4-11. Yvonne Wende is honoured as ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’. An EU grant to promote value systems in educational institutions is awarded to the school.
2017
Two IB students are among the top 1% worldwide.
The school is recognised as a STEM-friendly, digital school. In addition, the school library goes online and the kindergarten receives an Erasmus+ grant for a strategic partnership in the field of education.
2016
The new Upper Secondary Forum for all IB and Abitur students is opened.
The first Abitur class achieves the best result of all Berlin schools with an average of 1.4. The newly designed backyard is inaugurated as an outdoor basketball and football pitch.
2015
The first IB Diploma year graduates successfully.
The school organises its first big summer show, showcasing talent from kindergarten to secondary school. Over 700 students from all over the world now study at the Rückerstrasse and Invalidenstrasse campuses.
2014
BCS celebrates its 10th anniversary and receives state recognition for the Secondary school.
2013
As an International Baccalaureate World School, BCS receives admission to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). The first MSA examinations are successfully passed. The Cosmovatorium, BCS’s music and dance school, is founded – the first school in Berlin to offer IB Dance. All classrooms now have modern technical equipment.
2012
The school’s own kitchen is founded thanks to the initiative of the parents. Head chef Hartmut Keuchel and his team cook over 700 healthy meals every day. In addition, the secondary school pupils are offered a special brunch buffet every morning.
2011
The media lab with over 20 computers is opened. October sees the opening of the second kindergarten and preschool ‘Kindergarten in the Park’ at Invalidenstrasse 130, Berlin-Mitte, with 40 children.
2010
The school grows to 130 kindergarten and pre-school children, 170 primary school children and 32 secondary school pupils in grades 7-8. The founding of the Central Hoops Berlin Cosmopolitan e. V. sports club and the opening of the school library enrich the programme.
2009
The Berlin Cosmopolitan School starts with 10 pupils in Year 7.In addition, the state-of-the-art science laboratory is opened and the first international student exchanges begin.
2008
With 70 pupils, the primary school moves into the current school building at Rückerstraße 9, Berlin-Mitte.Thanks to two generous sponsors, the building is purchased for the school. The dance hall with its large mirrored wall is officially opened and all classrooms are equipped with SMARTboards and internet.
2007
The primary school of the Berlin Cosmopolitan School opens its doors with 30 pupils in grades 1-4 in the building of the Evangelical Sophienkirche in Große Hamburger Straße, Berlin-Mitte. We would like to thank the Protestant congregation for their support.
2006
With the establishment of the European Education Foundation by Helga Helmbold and the support of Michele V. Adamski, the vision of the Berlin Cosmopolitan School is taking shape.
2005
The kindergarten grows to 35 children within six months. The Berlin Cosmopolitan School’s music programme starts at the same time: ‘Loving music only works if you play it yourself. But that has to happen early on.’ (Yvonne Wende)
2004
The first bilingual English-German kindergarten in Berlin-Mitte opens its doors in September with 18 children – the foundation stone for today’s Berlin Cosmopolitan School. Anita Kreft, a qualified dance teacher and graduate of the Palucca School in Dresden, begins teaching dance to the pre-school children.
2003
The non-profit organisation ‘Initiative für Bildungs- und Begabungsförderung’, which focuses on international education, is founded by Yvonne Wende, an experienced teacher and headmistress. Within a year, the first international preschool is established in Berlin-Mitte.
