TIME DETECTIVES: A Journey Through History and Peace at the BCS Nature Campus
In a powerful and immersive learning experience, the Berlin Cosmopolitan School hosted a day-long event titled “Time Detectives” at its Nature Campus to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This interdisciplinary and international program brought together students, teachers, and parents in a living history project aimed at uncovering the global impact of the war—and cultivating a shared vision of peace.
Organized under the theme of a “Peace Mission,” the event took students on a journey through time, across continents, and into the stories of real people affected by war. From the divided Korean peninsula and postwar Japan to the rubble of Berlin and the exile journeys to Mexico, 13 interactive learning stations recreated historical moments, inviting students to think critically, empathize deeply, and connect globally.
The day began with a joint assembly featuring a short film and a keynote on the worldwide consequences of WWII. Students received maps and passports before being divided into small groups to rotate through immersive, parent-led stations. Each station represented a different country or theme, such as:
- Nigeria: Exploring the emotional toll of war on families left behind.
- Switzerland: Learning about child evacuations and food scarcity.
- China: Recreating a refugee family’s escape.
- Germany: Highlighting the pressure on agriculture and overcrowding in rural areas.
- Poland: Understanding the massive reconstruction of Warsaw.
- USA, Japan, and Germany: Reflecting on post-war reconciliation and resilience.
In a moving conclusion, students gathered to lay down self-made “Peace Stones” in the newly inaugurated Peace Circle—a symbolic space on campus to remember the past and inspire peaceful futures. The day ended with a community celebration in Schendelpark, where students, parents, and teachers sang songs including “Imagine” from the Beatles and enjoyed a shared picnic.
More than just a history lesson, “Time Detectives” empowered students to examine past conflicts through a human lens and to consider their role in shaping a more just, peaceful world. With its unique mix of storytelling, simulation, and emotional engagement, the project embodied the spirit of the BCS Nature Campus: learning with head, heart, and hands.
