May 8, 2025: A Special Public Holiday in Berlin
May 8, 2025, has been designated as a unique public holiday in Berlin. This holiday is applicable exclusively in Berlin. The Berlin Cosmopolitan School will remain closed on this day, as neither lessons nor school events will take place.
Why is May 8 a holiday?
May 8 is a historically significant date: On this day in 1945, World War II in Europe ended with the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht. This day marks the end of National Socialism and the liberation of Europe from war and terror.
In Germany, May 8 is often referred to as the “Day of Liberation.” By declaring this day a public holiday this year, a special gesture is made to honor the importance of this historical event and to create space for reflection and remembrance. In 2020, May 8 was celebrated as a one-time holiday in Berlin on the 75th anniversary of liberation.
A Day for Peace and Democracy
As an international school, we believe it is essential to raise awareness within our school community about the values of peace, tolerance, and democracy. May 8 provides a special opportunity to engage with these topics – whether in the family circle or through a thoughtful reflection on history.
We wish all families of the Berlin Cosmopolitan School a reflective holiday and invite you to share and discuss the significance of this day with your children.
