International Maths Teams Competition Bolyai

24th May, 2018

The Maths Teams Competition Bolyai is open to students from grade 3-12. This year we entered six teams from grade 6 to 10, who on the 17th January 2018 competed against other schools in Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Schleswig-Holstein. The grade 8 team, ‘The Pandas’ with Marcel, Cara, Jonas and Vivien were only four points short of reaching the finals in Budapest. They were awarded 8th place from 80 teams.

The grade 9 team ‘The Mind Busters’ with Finn, Adrian, Bianca and Egor came 12th of 63 teams, they were only six points away from the finals. Team ‘Grade 10Au’ with Hong Jae, David, Helena and Malena were 17th place from 39 teams. Grade 6,’ die Geilen in Mathe’ with Gretel, Mercy, Livia and Sara came 41st out of 141 teams.

The grade 8 team, ‘the Pandas’, they said the competition was fun, and the teamwork strengthened the group. They also said it was disappointing to be so close to reaching the finals. They revealed their winning strategy which was to, initially divide the 13 questions, then each team member would select a question, they felt they could answer. Once they had answered the questions, they gave it to another team member to check. The last geometry question they did together. The idea for their team name came from a pencil case that Cara had with a panda on it. Congratulations to all the teams that took part in this year’s Maths Team Bolyai and produced results to be proud of.

A big thank you to Faith Carter for organizing as well as supervising our Maths teams.
