BCS Jazz Concert: A Night of Swing, Improvisation and Talent

2nd December, 2024

On Thursday Night of November 28, 2024 the Berlin Cosmopolitan School came alive with the soulful sounds of jazz as the BCS Jazz Concert showcased the incredible talent of our young musicians. The event featured three ensembles—the COSMO Quartet + Strings, the COSMO Quartet, and the BCS Jazz Ensemble—each bringing their unique interpretation to iconic jazz standards.

The evening began with the COSMO Quartet + Strings delivering a mesmerizing performance of Duke Ellington’s Satin Doll. Featuring violinists Anna May Wengierek, Elizabeth Janisch, and Filippa Maria Bree alongside guitarist Tim Germanovich and a skilled rhythm section, the group captivated the audience with their elegant and dynamic sound.

The COSMO Quartet followed, exploring classics such as Autumn Leaves and John Coltrane’s Equinox. Their expressive solos and seamless collaboration highlighted the artistry of students like pianist Oliver Hansen and bassist Malcolm Hansen.
The grand finale came with the BCS Jazz Ensemble, directed by Secondary Music Teacher Colin Lloyd. This diverse group, featuring instruments not typically associated with big bands—such as flute and clarinet—delivered standout performances of Milestones by Miles Davis and Stolen Moments by Oliver Nelson. The ensemble’s unique instrumentation, inspired by innovative jazz collectives, brought a refreshing twist to the traditional jazz repertoire.

This concert marked the culmination of months of dedication by students who not only rehearsed diligently but also immersed themselves in the history and theory of jazz. It was a celebration of their hard work, creativity, and passion for music.

Missed the show? Don’t worry! The BCS Jazz Ensemble will perform again during the Winter Show at Müggelsee Campus, featuring some festive additions to their repertoire. Stay tuned for more details and prepare to be swept away by the magic of jazz once again.
